Totally Frenched Out

The one bad thing about C's proposal was the timing, ie. It took place the day we left before the US. I was all "Dude! Couldn't you have proposed a few days earlier?? Now we are going to lose a month of planning!"

And then we got back to France, and found out that both of us had to be there to turn in the marriage dossier....which is fine, except the only two work days I am home in April, C works from 9-6.

*BAM*

Another month lost.

Which means that everything is basically on hold until May because we can't plan anything until we know the official date. And for someone who is a major planner like me, it is pure torture. Every time I come home, that damn wedding to-do list is staring at me, taunting me. Like "Ha ha, look at all this stuff there is to do and you can't do any of it!"

I'm telling you guys, getting married on a desert island is starting to sound like a pretty good idea right about now...

There is always the option of getting married in Vegas at the Elvis drive-thru... (it's an option...) :)

When we decided to get married, we looked at all the options and discovered that it was waaaaay easier to get married in Canada than in France. Our situation was complicated by the fact that we were both divorced and so the French authorities would have wanted documents that don't even exist in Canada (meaning hiring a Canadian lawyer to "make up" these documents). We ended up getting married in my niece's backyard by a friend who is a minister (completely impossible to do in France!). All ll I had to do was wait for the marriage certificate to arrive in the mail, bring it to the consulate and I had my "livret de famille" a couple of days afterward.

Good luck with the planning and the paperwork. It will all turn out and be lovely! Congratulations!

Every time you start to stress out, remember it's about the marriage and not the wedding.

All of it will get done. I know you want to start now, but if certain things have to be tweaked re: the timing, so be it. All the planning will be finished in time and it will be a great wedding. Stop stressing...everything will work out!!

Why the rush? Is there a reason you need to get married before a certain date? Shotgun wedding?I'm confused!

I know how you feel...when Lionel and I got married, we only had 2 months after my return to France to do all the papers and plan a wedding because of my visa so we ended up getting our wedding date 2 weeks before the actual wedding and 3 weeks before I would have had to leave France if we hadn't gotten married. As you can imagine, 2 weeks isn't a lot of time to plan, so we ended up just having our required ceremony at la mairie, the vin d'honneur at a friend's apartment, and dinner at a restaurant near our apartment that was big enough for our reservation. In the end we spent almost no money and had a great time, though it was nothing like any traditional wedding I would have ever imagined.

I'm sure it will all work out for you no matter what and in the end what matters most is that you have a good time and you get married! Good luck!

Oooooh bugger! But it will all be ok in the end. We'll be your cheer squad!
When we got married back in 2003 we didn't have the official date until 1 month before! The Mairie couldn't give us a date until they'd processed all the stuff on their end. Apparently. Who knows if that's a typical situation or just due to the fact that we were doing it in the middle of nowhere (probably the latter). So my parents & sister bought their tickets to come over for 5 weeks & we just HOPED that the wedding would fall in that time period! LOL. Which it did, so it all worked out in the end!

My Scottish man (met in Paris) and I (American) got married in NYC at the Manhattan marriage bureau...it's really classy now (not like the DMV style it used to be) - has green marble, brass fixtures, and is super fun and multicultural. We looked into getting married in France and the UK and both were so complicated that going back to the USA and getting a quick civil ceremony in NYC was not only cheaper, easier, faster and we had our honeymoon by Central Park ;-). Just a suggestion if planning is stressing you out. You could always have a big party in Paris after the fact. There's a 24 hour waiting period from license to marriage ceremony (but you can get a court order for a good reason to not wait the 24 hours - PS. but your fiancé must be able to mimic Scotty from Star Trek - just saying the judge was a fan LOL!). Much luck with your plans!

I love my parents for giving me a big wedding but the truth is, I always wanted to elope. Even now, every time we pass the Mairie my husband and I joke about when we're getting "married" there.
